The object of cruise business in Incheon Port that was highly dependent on China is being diversified.

As a result of cruise port sales that were conducted in Taiwan from May 17 to May 19, Incheon Port Authority announced on May 23 that it decided to push for proactive expansion of cruise business in Incheon Port into Southeast Asia.

During the port sales, IPA conducted an interview with officials with Port of Keelung, the Taiwan’s largest cruise home port, and closely shared information and know-hows related to operation of a cruise port while pushing for establishment of an MOU for reciprocal business and collaboration in facilitation of cruise business in the two ports.

In addition, during the period of the cruise port sales in Taiwan, IPA joined 2017 Taiwan Cruise Inducement Sales supervised by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries in order to proactively promote cruise infrastructure in Incheon Port and the attractiveness of the port as a home port and a calling port. As a result, many officials with Taiwanese governmental institutions and cruise travel agencies visited Incheon Port booth to request consulting, which indicates that the Taiwanese cruise industry has a strong interest in Incheon Port.

In the meantime, IPA was officially requested to join Asia Cruise Cooperation (ACC) by Tourism Bureau of Taiwan has a plan to thoroughly review with regard to the issue. ACC is an organization with five-member cruise ports in Manila in the Philippines, Keelung in Taiwan, and Xiamen, Hainan and Hong Kong, and it is opening joint cruise routes and conducting joint marketing. According to IPA, as local cruise routes are facilitated through ACC in South East Asia, Incheon Port’s ACC membership is expected to have positive effects on diversification of cruise routes of Incheon Port.

As to reasons for request to IPA of application for ACC membership by the Taiwanese government, IPA explained that the Taiwanese government highly evaluated the attractiveness of Incheon Port, a gateway to the capital area of Korea and diverse tourist attractions around a calling port, and that a new market will be opened to enable Korean cruise tourists to travel to ACC member cruise ports based on Incheon Port as a home port, upon completion of construction of Incheon Port Cruise Terminal in 2018. It also said that a Taiwanese governmental plan aimed to shift its focus from South East Asia to North East Asia and expand cruise routes and markets seems to be one of reasons for the application request to IPA.
